Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Super Sport Car: Win Auto BLD Design Award 2010

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG super sports car is celebrating a brilliant victory in the huge design competition organised by Germany's AUTO BILD magazine. Around 200,000 readers of 21 European editions of the specialist publication voted the new gull-wing model into top place as Europe's most attractive car. In addition, the SLS AMG has also been honoured with the coveted Plus X Award for "high quality" and "design" in the world's largest technology, sport and lifestyle contest.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG picked up a number of top-class awards: after being awarded the AUTO BILD Design Award 2010 for Germany by AUTO BILD readers, the super sports car from Affalterbach then even went on to notch up a double victory in the European-wide vote. Around 200,000 readers of the international editions of the popular specialist publication not only voted it into first place in the coupés and cabriolets category, but at the same time also ranked the new gull-wing model as the overall winner of this car beauty contest. As a result the SLS AMG is now the proud bearer of the title "Europe's most attractive car".

While the personal taste of the readers was the sole determining factor for the AUTO BILD Design Award, in the case of the world's largest technology, sport and lifestyle contest it was the votes of no fewer than 144 independent, renowned specialist journalists and industry experts from 32 different countries which counted. Making their choice from among a selection of outstanding and particularly innovative vehicles, the majority again voted in favour of the SLS AMG and honoured it with the coveted Plus X Award.

With its exciting design and gull-wing doors, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG harks back to that sporting legend of the 1950's - the 300 SL.

The super sports car also dazzles with its exquisite technology which includes such highlights as an aluminium spaceframe body shell, AMG 6.3-litre V8 front mid engine with dry sump lubrication as well as a 420 kW (571 hp) and 650 Nm of torque, seven-speed double-clutch transmission in a transaxle arrangement and a responsive sports suspension with aluminium double-wishbone axles. This unique high-tech combination helps to guarantee the highest level of driving dynamics.

Maruti Swift Car India: Maruti Sells 4.5 Lakh Maruti Swift Cars in 5 Years

Maruti Suzuki Swift, the brand that has transformed the Indian car landscape, turns five tomorrow. The Maruti Swift was launched in India on May 25, 2005. The car seemed destined to succeed from the day it was born. Nearly 16,000 customers had placed advance orders for the Maruti Swift even before it was unveiled and its price made public. It won a bagful of awards that year, including all the car-of-the-year awards in India.

The international editions of Maruti Swift similarly won awards in markets across the world. In these five years, more than 4.5 lakh Maruti Swift cars have been sold in India.

In the early days of the brand, nearly 5,000 Maruti Swift cars were produced every month; an ambitious number for a car in that segment. In these five years, the Company has had to regularly scale up capacity and production to meet unmet demand for brand Swift.

Today, driven by customer demand, Maruti Suzuki manufactures over 12,000 Swift cars in a month (including the diesel versions).

Maruti Swift: New Design Philosophy
The Swift is a landmark model for many reasons. As Suzuki Motor Corporation’s first World Strategic Model, it ushered in the new design philosophy of the Japanese small car giant. Bold, aggressive, distinctly European, sporty and curvy, it was unlike anything that Suzuki had offered until then. When Maruti Suzuki launched the Swift in India, it was instantly appreciated by Indian customers.

The same sporty and dynamic design philosophy is evident in the subsequent four World Strategic Models – Grand Vitara, SX4, Ritz and A-star – that Maruti Suzuki has launched since then.

Maruti Suzuki’s Managing Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales), Mayank Pareek said, “The Swift has captured the imagination of Gen-next. It symbolises Maruti Suzuki’s efforts to be in step with a changing India. Its sporty styling and peppy performance made it an instant hit, and these attributes remain unsurpassed even today.”

Maruti Swift: The Indian story
The Swift is also special because this was the first time when Maruti Suzuki engineers worked in collaboration with Suzuki engineers in Japan to design and develop this car. Thus, the Swift launched in India was a global model, sensitive to requirements of Indian customers.
The knowledge and exposure gained with the Swift enhanced the R & D capability of Maruti Suzuki, and enabled the Company to launch more India-sensitive models and face lifts in these last five years.

Maruti Swift: Defining a New Segment
Five years ago, it was hard to conceive that customers of small cars in India would be willing to pay a premium for a small car. The Swift successfully challenged that perception and defined what is now popularly known as the premium A2 segment of the Indian car industry.

Maruti Swift and the New India:
Part of the reason for Swift’s success is that its journey coincided with a transforming India. In the last five years, customers have become more assertive, aware and demanding. They seek the best the world has to offer, while retaining ‘Indian’ values of reliability, fuel efficiency and low cost of ownership. The Swift has successfully balanced these demands.

The Maruti Swift Diesel:
Brand Swift’s defining role is extended to the diesel segment as well. Launched in January 2007, it was instantly lapped up by customers who sought refinement and performance alongside the fuel economy of diesel. With the DDiS engine (Europe’s Engine of the Year 2005), the Swift Diesel marked Maruti Suzuki’s re-entry into the diesel car market.

The Cult car:
Over the years, customers have conferred an iconic status to brand Swift. Little wonder that the Swift Life online Community is fast gaining popularity. The passionate Swift customers engage among themselves and with their favourite brand online and offline.

Maruti Swift and World Record:
As a part of Swift’s birthday celebrations and to commemorate the landmark, on Sunday, May 30, Maruti Suzuki will attempt to set a new World Record by bringing together the largest gathering of Swift cars in three cities – Delhi NCR at Gurgaon, Mumbai and Sriperumbudur at Chennai – simultaneously. This will be a first-of-its kind attempt in India and of its size anywhere in the world.

A snapshot of Maruti Swift's sterling performance:
1st One lakh units in under 21 months
2nd One lakh units in under 13 months, fastest 2 lakh units sales among all cars
3rd One lakh units in under 11 months, fastest 3 lakh units sales among all cars
4th One lakh units in under 11 months
Only car in A2 + segment to achieve over 1 lakh unit sales per year consecutively for last two years.

As per the ARAI certified fuel efficiency, the Swift Diesel with its compact 1.3 litre DDiS engine delivers 21 kmpl, while the Swift Petrol with next generation K Series 1.2 litre engine has a fuel efficiency of 17.94 kmpl.

Volkswagen India to flag-off First Polo Cup India 2010 Starts From 30 May

Volkswagen India will flag-off of the first ever Polo Cup India 2010 with the first race of the season to be held on May 30, 2010 at the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi in Pune, the hometown of Volkswagen India. The final 20 drivers will compete in a series of six races held between May and December 2010.

"Volkswagen India is happy and proud to announce the final 20 aspiring racers who have been short listed for the first-ever Polo Cup India 2010. These final drivers represent the best raw talent the country has to offer. Polo Cup is the boost that the young drivers in India deserve and have been waiting for. We are thrilled as this is the first year of Polo Cup in India and we are really convinced that this first single-make manufacturer-backed series in India will become a new milestone in the success story of Volkswagen India”, expressed Mr. Joerg Mueller, Volkswagen Group Chief Representative India, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Limited on the occasion of a media briefing today at the race track at Balewadi Sports Complex.

Over 1,100 motor sports enthusiasts from across the country registered to compete in the Polo Cup India 2010 and become a part of Indian motor sport history. After a strict selection process 20 young talents were chosen to form the starting grid in the first race in Pune. The selection process ran from the last week of March to mid of May. The aspiring racers were divided into 2 groups – first-timers and experienced racers, and were put through two rounds of selection. The young racers were narrowed down to 45 drivers through an adrenalin-pumping go-kart selection. The short listed drivers were then placed behind the wheel of the Race Polos, for the second round of selections held in Coimbatore, to earn their place in the final 20 candidates for the races.

The candidates were selected with the support of the expert selection team. The team of selectors consisted of one driver selector & coach from Germany Polo Cup, two Indian driver coaches (experienced drivers from Volkswagen & JK Tyre) and one FMSCI representative, including some of the doyens of Indian motor sports like Akbar Ebrahim, India’s only principle instructor in racing, Farhan Vora, India’s guest F1 steward and Rayomand Banerji, six times National Champion. They personally followed the international structures and conducted the coaching camps to select the best young talent.

The 20 short listed drivers will celebrate their world debut at the Polo Cup India 2010 as part of the JK Tyre-FMSCI Indian National Racing Championship 2010. They will compete in six races across the country, the first in Pune, and then followed by five races on the race courses in Coimbatore and Chennai. Below is the starting line-up:

The first race of the Polo Cup India at the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Balewadi in Pune will be the first major four-wheeler racing event to be held in Pune. The 20 short listed drivers, divided into two batches, will ‘burn rubber’ for the first time in a practice session at the circuit on Friday, May 28. Saturday, May 29 will witness a Free Practice session for the drivers followed by the Qualifiers. The fastest laps in the Qualifiers will determine the starting grid for the races to be held on Race Day, May 30.

Spectators will get a chance to see the final line up of the drivers in the drivers’ parade, marking the start of Race Day. This will be followed by two race sessions of 20 laps each. The final podium standings will be announced with a prize distribution the same evening. This weekend format will be followed for all the remaining races of the Polo Cup India 2010.

Like the spark that breathes life into a dormant combustion engine, the Polo Cup India was but a tiny idea conceptualised in October 2008. The journey of this thought into one of the biggest single-make touring car series in India is truly inspiring. The process of Volkswagen’s internal discussions in Germany and prospecting of Indian partners culminated in signing of the Letter of Intent with JK Tyre in October 2009. This is when the hard work truly began. Months of grease and sweat lead to unveiling of the Race Polo in the Delhi Auto Expo 2010. A fierce grill and clean lines form the perfect shell to the 1.6-liter R4 common rail diesel (CRD) engine, which can produce a top speed of 180 km/h.

All New 2011 Ford Fiesta EPA Certified 40 MPG Rating: Most Fuel Efficient Car

Ford's all-new 2011 Fiesta – an Internet star even before it goes on sale this summer – will now stand out on the highway with an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified 40 mpg rating, making it the most fuel efficient car in its class.

The Ford Fiesta 40 mpg, achieved with Ford's new six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission, is 5 mpg better than the Honda Fit and 4 mpg better than the Toyota Yaris.

"The new Fiesta is yet another car in Ford’s lineup that delivers class-leading fuel economy," said Barb Samardzich, vice president, Global Powertrain Engineering. "From Super Duty to Fusion Hybrid and the new Mustang V-6, Ford is committed to fuel economy leadership with every new vehicle it introduces in all segments."

Fiesta's class-leading fuel efficiency follows Fusion Hybrid – America's most fuel efficient midsize sedan – and other fuel economy champs such as the Ford Escape Hybrid, Mercury Mariner Hybrid and Ford Ranger pickup. For 2011, the streak continues with the Mustang V-6, Ford Super Duty and now the responsive, sporty and economical Fiesta. Moving forward, Ford is committed to being a fuel economy leader in each segment in which it competes.

The Fiesta achieves its best-in-segment fuel figures thanks to a host of fuel-saving technologies not normally seen at this price level. To increase fuel economy, Fiesta features a new 1.6-liter Duratec engine with Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) that delivers 120 horsepower, an aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff and an engine accessory drive system that improves efficiency by reducing the energy it takes to power the air conditioner and alternator.

In addition, the Fiesta also features the PowerShift transmission, a six-speed automatic that combines the fuel benefits of a manual with the convenience of an automatic. Combine that with electric power-assisted steering, another fuel saver and some aerodynamic optimizations and you have a car that can go a long way on a single tank of fuel.

"We worked hard to deliver the class-leading fuel economy Ford is becoming synonymous for," said Steve Pintar, Fiesta chief nameplate engineer. "To be the only vehicle in the segment to deliver 40 mpg is something we feel consumers will appreciate."

The 2011 Fiesta with standard five-speed manual transmission is EPA rated at 28 mpg city and 37 mpg highway.

These efficiency innovations combine with the stylish and aerodynamically clean Fiesta body design to efficiently slip through the wind with both fuel savings and reduced wind noise.

Fiesta is built for North American markets at Ford's manufacturing facility in Cuautitlan, Mexico. The vehicle goes on sale in four-door sedan and five-door hatchback body styles – with the sedan starting at $13,995, including destination charges – at Ford dealerships this summer.

Bentley Continental Supersports Car Launched in India

Exclusive Motors Pvt. Ltd. has brought to India Continental Supersports the fastest and most powerful Bentley ever. It is the extreme Bentley, a muscular two-seater that delivers supercar performance and a highly focused driving experience.

The Supersports is also the first Bentley capable of running on both petrol (gasoline) and biofuel, pioneering the use of FlexFuel technology in the luxury sector. This represents stage one of the company's commitment to make its complete model range compatible with renewable fuels by 2012.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Satya Bagla, Managing Director, Exclusive Motors Pvt. Ltd. said,” We are ecstatic to launch the new Bentley Continental Supersports in India. Being the fastest and most powerful Bentley the coupe is sure to excite the speed lovers in India. It is our constant endeavour to bring the best in the luxury auto space to our customers. Bentley Continental Supersports has received an overwhelming response worldwide and we are hoping that our Indian audiences will be thrilled with the machine as well.”

Bentley Continental Supersports Car India
The Continental Supersports began as an ‘under the radar’ project exploring the possibilities of weight reduction on the Continental GT but with more power and torque. A largely experimental process crystallised over a period of 24 months into an official new car programme, driven by the passion and enthusiasm of a small group of Bentley engineers and designers.

The results are dramatic. With 630PS (621 bhp) and new ‘Quickshift’ transmission that halves shift times, the Supersports sets new performance benchmarks for Bentley. It accelerates from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds (0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds) onto a top speed of 204 mph (329 km/h).

Supercar performance is complemented by an array of chassis enhancements including retuned steering and suspension, utilising lighter weight components, retuned dampers and anti-roll bars.

Agility is further sharpened by the 40:60 rear-biased torque split for the all-wheel drive system, a wider rear track, bespoke lightweight 20-inch alloy wheels and a unique electronic stability programme.

Carbon ceramic brakes are standard fitment, benefiting steering response, grip and ride comfort, while saving weight. Overall, the engineering team have achieved a weight reduction of 110 kg (243 lb) compared with the Continental GT Speed.

The evolution of the Super sports design is very much a case of 'form following function' with new purposeful sculptural forms signaling the engineering changes beneath the skin.

For example, the increased power and torque of the W12 engine necessitated additional airflow to the twin turbocharger intercoolers and cooling system. Bentley’s designers responded with a purposeful and dramatic style that features large vertical intake apertures and twin bonnet vents.

Similarly, new flared rear wings that accommodate the 50 mm (2 inches) wider rear track are designed to emphasize the powerful stance of this ultra-high performance coupe. The resultant Supersports style combines the looks of the iconic Continental GT with a new and distinctive appearance that reflects its more extreme character.

The Supersports is further distinguished from its Continental coupe stable mates by a unique dark-smoked steel finish to all exterior ‘brightware’, including front grilles, lamp bezels, window surrounds and wheels. A complex ‘Physical Vapour Deposition’ process is applied to all stainless steel components to give a lustrous and highly durable finish. A car industry first, this process is normally used as a coating on industrial tools, watches and even hip replacement joints.

Fully embracing the extreme spirit of the Supersports, Bentley’s interior designers have created a unique ambience. The cockpit represents a dramatic re-interpretation of Bentley interior design in which carbon fibre and AlcantaraTM not only convey a sporting and contemporary style but also reduce weight.

The Supersports is a strict two-seater featuring all-new lightweight sports seats with carbon fibre clamshell rear panels. In the rear compartment, the seats are replaced by a stowage deck with a carbon fibre luggage retaining beam.

The new interior also provides a showcase for the skills of Bentley’s craftsmen and women at the company’s factory in Crewe, England. Signature premium grade leather and brightware are complemented by carbon fibre panels, replacing traditional wood veneers.

The Continental Supersports is capable of running on either petrol and E85 biofuel or any combination of the two. E85 biofuel can offer a reduction of up to 70 per cent in CO2 emissions on a ‘well-to-wheel’ basis.

Well-to-wheel is a measurement of a fuel’s net CO2 contribution to the atmosphere, not just tailpipe emissions. It is a way of quantifying how much CO2 a fuel emits from its growth or extraction (well) to its combustion or deployment (wheel). It includes refinement, distillation and transport of the fuel.

The fuel supply system detects the blending ratio of the fuel in the tank and ensures that power and torque remain constant regardless of the ratio of petrol to biofuel. The result is seamless power delivery in the Bentley tradition.

The 'Supersports' name is inspired by the original two-seater 3-litre Supersports model introduced in 1925, itself an evolution of the 3-litre Speed. The lightweight, 85 bhp Supersports was the first production Bentley to reach 100 mph and was also renowned for the application of Le Mans-winning race technology.

Mercedes-Benz Launches C 200: CGI Technology Car in India @ Rs. 26,25 Lacs

Mercedes-Benz unveiled its roadmap for gasoline engine technology in India. "The CGI technology heralds a new era in gasoline engines with improved output, optimized consumption and even more impressive emission statistics" commented Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bharat Balasubramanian, Vice President Product Innovations & Process Technologies, Group Research & Advanced Engineering, Daimler AG, speaking to media persons at the launch event.

The CGI technology makes its debut in the C-Class. Dr. Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India explained the rationale: "The C-Class is in most cases the first touch point of customers with our brand. Mercedes-Benz stands for exciting products and cutting edge technologies; what better way to reinforce this promise than by offering the C 200 CGI as the harbinger of the CGI revolution in gasoline engines!"

The CGI technology is the first of its kind in the world to use sophisticated petrol direct-injection engine with spray guided combustion process. CGI engines use piezo-injectors (also seen on the global F700 DiesOtto concept presented by Daimler AG). With the new technology, the engine can run with high excess air and thus offer excellent fuel efficiency. Thanks to multiple injection, it is for the first time possible to extend this lean-burn operating mode to higher rpm and load ranges too.

Among the most important components of this innovative direct petrol injection system are the fast-acting piezoelectric injectors. They have nozzles which open outwards to create an annular gap just a few microns wide. This gap shapes the fuel jet and produces a uniform, hollow-cone-shaped spray pattern. The microsecond response times of the piezoelectric injectors provide the basis for delivering multiple injections per power stroke, and thus for lean-burn operation. By allowing flexible and efficient control of the combustion process they play a key part in ensuring the engine's outstanding fuel efficiency. The engine’s innovative injection procedure makes for much better fuel and thermodynamic efficiency than the wall-guided combustion process previously employed with direct injection.

Mercedes-Benz has replaced the previous 4-in-line KOMPRESSOR Technology with the world's first spray-guided direct petrol injection. Thus in the C-Class, the C 200CGI replaces the C 200 Kompressor in the model range. The C 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY equipped with the new engine technology consumes just 11.4 km /litres of fuel knocking 0.78 litres off the values of the C200Kompressor. CO2 emissions are also reduced from 215g/km to 201 g/km. The debutante offers an output of 137kW at 5600rpm (approx. 5% increase over the C 200Kompressor). At the same time it offers increased bottom-end torque of 285 Nm at 2400-4000 rpm (C 200Kompressor = 240 Nm @ 3500 - 4500rpm ). Thus the C 200CGI is keenly tuned in with the environmental objectives of lower emission at the same time becoming even more pleasurable to drive, more sporty and quick.

As well as an exciting design and hallmark Mercedes refinement, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class displays state-of-the-art technology such as the AGILITY CONTROL package with selective damper control and the PRE-SAFE system with anticipatory occupant-protection measures. Furthermore, independent studies confirm that the C-Class has the highest resale value in the medium-size category, while the latest breakdown statistics compiled by the ADAC (German Automobile Association) reveal that it is the most reliable car in its class.

The Mercedes-Benz C 200 CGI is priced at Rs. 26,25 Lacs Ex-showroom Mumbai. ( Ex Delhi is 28.98, Ex-Bangalore = 29.23 )

Chevrolet Aveo CNG Version Car Launched by GM India

General Motors India today launched the CNG version of its Chevrolet Aveo mid-size sedan at a ceremony presided over by its President and Managing Director Mr. Karl Slym. The Chevrolet Aveo CNG is a bi-fuel vehicle with a full-size petrol tank that is one of the most environmentally friendly cars available in India.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Slym said, "The launch of the Aveo CNG is a testament to the importance that GM India attaches to green technology and environmentally friendly mobility solutions. Its running cost is approximately 54 percent lower than a similar vehicle powered by petrol and 25 percent lower than a similar vehicle powered by diesel. Because of the lower operating economics and the growing number of CNG stations being built across India, this new offering is expected to appeal to both individual and fleet customers. Under normal driving conditions, the Aveo CNG has a range of 180 to 200 kilometres on a full tank of CNG and is BS IV compliant."

The Chevrolet Aveo CNG is equipped with next-generation computer-controlled CNG injection technology from Italy. In an industry first, all “critical to quality” CNG kit components are fitted at the factory – including the CNG injectors, selector switch, modified wiring and suspension – to ensure high-quality and trouble-free service. In addition, the body is reinforced to carry the additional mass of the cylinder. Sequential injection represents the most advanced level of evolution of CNG kit technology. The ECU (Electronic Controller Unit) calculates the opening times of the injectors for each cylinder and acts separately on each gas injector with the highest precision.

Chevrolet Aveo CNG Features include:

1. The sequential injection kit offers precise fuel delivery control through electronic injectors, ensuring efficient combustion.

2. The engine offers stable performance in CNG mode.

3. The Aveo has a CNG-compatible engine. Hardened valve seats and anodized pistons are used in the proven 1.4-litre VGIS (Variable Geometry Intake System) petrol engine. This ensures no engine damage or reliability issues in CNG mode.

4. Minimum service is required owing to the Aveo CNG’s advanced electronic operation.

5. The suspension has been reinforced to support the additional mass of the CNG cylinder in the trunk.

GM India engineers have done extensive testing and validation of the Aveo CNG. The Chevrolet Aveo CNG comes with a three-year/100,000-km standard warranty, which is an industry first in the mid-size sedan segment, and a service interval of 5,000 km or six months (whichever comes first). During the run of the Aveo in pure CNG mode will not impact the vehicle warranty.

It may be recalled that the Chevrolet Aveo finished first in its segment in the prestigious J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) two years in a row because of its class-leading quality attributes. It has also been rated best in class in terms of fuel economy by journalists across the country. In addition, the Aveo has won several awards since its introduction.

The Chevrolet Aveo is a global product that incorporates the latest technology and meets the highest standards of quality. It has been re-engineered for India based on extensive testing across the country to meet the specific needs of local customers, driving conditions and regulations. Its class-leading performance and long list of features make it an ideal city car. The Aveo is being sold in more than 140 countries around the world, including several European markets and the United States.
